CHAPTER 14
The day was warming up fast by the time she arrived at the Hanningâs home. Sharon was busy in her husbandâs office trying to help organize a charity fundraiser while he was out of the house, so Jane left her alone as she went about cleaning their home. When she walked by the closed door to the office, she could hear Sharon on the other side speaking on the phone. Jane tried to walk by quietly so she wouldnât disturb her.
On the drive over, Jane had tried to call Heidi back to tell her what Faith had said. They now knew the name of the movie and the plot, which seemed pretty relevant. Sheâd been hoping that by telling Heidi the title of the movie and the plot that she would recall something else. Maybe a discussion or an offhand comment that Ebony might have made in the days leading up to her disappearance. But Heidi hadnât answered the phone, so she left a message and moved on with her day, however that didnât keep her from checking her phone off and on as she worked.
Jane stepped out on the patio to check the area and make sure it still looked acceptable. She moved around the wicker patio furniture and straightened the pillows and fluffed the back cushions. She moved methodically and without thinking.
Sheâd been cleaning for the Hannings for so long now that it was almost as rote as cleaning her own home. Actually, maybe a little more so. Satisfied, she headed back toward the sliding glass door, eyeing it for handprints.
Reaching for her glass cleaner and a fresh rag, she thought about the fact that Faith had told her Ebony didnât discuss work with her. Jane wondered if she discussed it with anyone? Say, Heidi? Or did she like to keep her private and work life completely separate? And if that was the way she felt, who did she talk to about her work life?
Her phone began to vibrate since she had it on silent mode. She looked at the screen and saw Heidiâs name. Jane had saved Heidiâs number to her contacts after her last call.
âHeidi, thanks for returning my call,â Jane said as she pressed the accept button.
âSorry, I had a job interview,â Heidi explained.
âNo apologies necessary. I spoke to Faith, and she remembered the movie,â she said.
âWhat was it?â Heidi asked eagerly.
âShe said it was called, âNight Birdâ. Itâs about a guy who becomes obsessed with a female bartender.â
âThatâs right!â Heidi replied enthusiastically. âI remember now.â
âDid she say anything else about it?â Jane asked.
âNo,â Heidi replied sadly. âAt least, not that I really remember.â
âWhat about work? Did she ever talk about her day, the troubles she was having at either job? Anything about her jobs?â
âNo, Ebony wasnât like that,â Heidi explained. âShe was a big believer in leaving work at work. Thatâs just the way she was. She didnât want to talk about it, because then that invited the stress of the day into our home, or so she said.
